Bayern Munich could enter the race for Napoli star Edinson Cavani after being told they will not be allowed to sign Robert Lewandowski from rivals Borussia Dortmund.

The 26-year-old Uruguayan has emerged as one of the best strikers in the world in recent years, and has been involved a long transfer saga between Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid in the last month.

New Bayern manager Pep Guardiola has been keen to recruit a new striker for next season, and made Dortmund’s Lewandowski a target after the Polish international expressed a desire to move to the Allianz Arena.

However, Dortmund have blocked the move, as they are keen not to sell another star player to their rivals after losing Mario Goetze to the Bavarian giants. This has seen Lewandowski linked with a move to several English teams, meaning that in turn Cavani could also become available.

Although Chelsea and City have been favourites to sign the prolific Napoli marksman, it is understood that he would be tempted to work under Guardiola and play for a side that was undoubtedly the best in Europe this term, winning the treble and breaking several records along the way.

Cavani has already ruled out a move to Real Madrid, saying he has doubts over whether he would enjoy playing in Spain, and so far no Italian teams have been linked with him, leaving only England and Germany as possible destinations.

There are few other clubs that could afford a player of his status, who is unlikely to move this summer for anything under his minimum release fee clause of £53.5million.

Having scored an incredible 104 goals in 138 games for the Serie A side, he looks well worth the money, and would be an excellent complement to this all-conquering Bayern side, who arguably lack a star striker of his quality. Mario Gomez has fallen out of favour with the club and could move this summer, and Mario Mandzukic has only scored 15 times since joining the club from Wolsburg.

It is thought in fact that Gomez could be used as part of a swap deap, with Napoli already having identified the German international as a possible replacement for Cavani if he left for Chelsea or City, though they will also listen to offers of Fernando Torres or Edin Dzeko in return from these clubs as well.

Bayern had also been linked with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, though he seems to have his heart set on a move to Real Madrid after expressing his desire to leave the Premier League this summer. His desire for this move, as well as Cavani’s reluctance to join the Spanish giants, has seen the leading scorer in Serie A become Guardiola’s first choice striker target.
