Manchester United are facing up to the prospect of having to pay a fee to German side Bayern Munich if they hope to complete a deal for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski according to The Daily Star.

Reports are suggesting that Lewandowski has agreed a complicated deal with Bayern that means they could now be due some compensation should he fail to sign for the club.

Lewandowski was widely expected to sign for the Bundesliga champions but his club Dortmund has refused to sanction the deal.

Relations between the two sides soured after Bayern announced they would be signing Mario Gotze from Dortmund on the eve of the latter’s Champions League semi-final game against Real Madrid.

Lewandowski remains keen to leave the club with United favourites to secure his signature. The club are believed to have been close to signing the player last summer, only to pull out at the last minute when it became apparent that Robin Van Persie was on the market.

The Polish striker has just  a year remaining on his current deal but that is not stopping Dortmund from demanding £25 million for the player.

Should Lewandowski arrive at Old Trafford, that could spell the end to Wayne Rooney’s United career as the England star has already voiced his concerns over his increasingly marginalised status in the United squad.
