New Napoli manager Rafa Benitez is hoping to beat Manchester United to the signing of PSV Eindhoven midfielder Kevin Strootman, according to talkSPORT.

Benitez took over the reins at the San Paolo earlier this month after being released from his duties as interim manager at Chelsea and is already looking to strengthen the Neapolitan side after they gained qualification to the Champions League by finishing second in Serie A behind Juventus last term.

And one of those targets is PSV’s Kevin Strootman, who has been a long time target of his former rivals Manchester United.

The Premier League champions have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old at several points over the past year and new manager David Moyes has been expected to follow up on the initial interest shown by predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, if Moyes wants to be sure of landing the Dutch international he may have to act quickly, as Napoli have reportedly made their interest public, according to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

Strootman joined PSV from fellow Eredivise side Utrecht in 2011 and has gone on to make an indelible impact during his short time at the Phillips Stadion making 62 appearances and scoring seven goals.

The 18-cap Dutch international is thought to be available for around £8 million.
