Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly ready to make a move for Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic according to Portuguese source ABola.

The Lisbon based side have demanded that any interested party pay the fee necessary to trigger the 24 year old’s release clause, said to be as much as €40m (£33m) a fee this source claims that the West London side won’t think twice about forking out.

Matic is of course a former Blues player, spending two years at Stamford Bridge one though one season of his spell at Chelsea entailed being loaned out to Vitesse Arnhem before being sold to Benfica in January 2011 as part of the deal that saw David Luiz move to the club.

The rangy midfielder has since excelled at the Estadio da Luz and was a pivotal player in Jorge Jesus’s plans last term.

A number of Benfica star’s have been linked with a move away from the Águias after a particularly traumatic campaign that saw the Portuguese side lose their grip on a Primeira Liga title, which they had led for much of the campaign, to FC Porto in the final weeks of the season.

Benfica then lost the Europa League final to Chelsea and compounded that loss with a shock loss in the Taça de Portugal final to Vitória Guimarães.

Mourinho may see the box to box performer as a preferable option to the likes of John Obi Mikel and Ramires.
