There will be plenty of familiar names on show in tonight’s close-looking Group A clash between Mexico and Italy in the Confederations Cup, which kicks off at 8pm GMT.
Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is the main threat for Mexico, who will need to get off to a good start in a difficult group, though they can take some confidence when they face Brazil after beating them in the Olympics last summer. However, they are not in the best form at the moment with just one win in their last six games.
Italy are also taking this competition seriously, bringing an experienced squad to Brazil as they prepare for next summer’s World Cup. Midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo should make his 100th appearance for Italy tonight, and he will have big-name AC Milan duo Mario Balotelli and Stephan El Shaarawy to aim for upfront.
Although Italy were beaten 4-0 by Spain in last summer’s Euro 2012 final, they have made big strides under Cesare Prandelli, and will be favourites to progress along with Brazil from this group.
These two sides last met in a friendly in 2010, with Mexico coming away as 2-1 winners, and a result like that tonight would certainly ease the pressure on their boss Jose Manuel de la Torre.
