Newcastle’s new director of football Joe Kinnear has said that Yohan Cabaye will stay at the club despite reported interest for AS Monaco, Goal.com reports.

Cabaye has been strongly linked with a move back to France, with big spending AS Monaco said to be preparing a bid for the midfielder.

Reports over the weekend suggested that Cabaye had already had a medical at Monaco without Newcastle knowing about it.

The midfielder also recently stated that he would be interested in a move to Manchester United.

However Kinnear has said that Cabaye will be staying on Tyneside and will start the new season with Newcastle.

“He will stay,” Kinnear said. “We’ve got him under contract – and we want to keep all of our top players here. We don’t feel we have to sell our top stars”.

The news that Newcastle will try and keep Cabaye will give a boast the clubs manager Alan Pardew, who is more interested in strengthening his side rather than making it weaker.

Kinnear has been appointed by Newcastle to handle all of the clubs transfers and will look to strengthen the squad this summer.

Newcastle have been linked with Aston Villa striker Darren Bent but can’t decide whether to pay the £6 million transfer fee or not.

Hull City and Crystal Palace are also closing in on the striker so Newcastle may have to move fast if they are to get their man.
