Ajax defender and long-time Liverpool target Toby Alderweireld looks set to snub a move to the Premier League and join Bayer Leverkusen, according to Sky Sports.

The 24-year-old has been on the radars of both Liverpool and Tottenham for some time, but appears to have chosen a move to the Bundesliga over the Premier League sides.

Alderweireld’s agent and father confirmed talks had progressed well with Leverkusen, who could make some big moves in the transfer market this summer following the lucrative sale of star player Andre Schurrle to Chelsea.

Sami Hyypia’s side have already replaced Schurrle with highly-rated Hamburg starlet Heung-Min Son, and will strengthen defensively with the signing of the Ajax centre-back.

“Bayer Leverkusen is the club who we are the furthest with in our discussions,” Vic Alderweireld said. “We will quickly meet the club again.”

Alderweireld, a Belgium international, has drawn comparisons with former Ajax stars Thomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen, two Belgian defenders who have gone on to make a name for themselves in the Premier League.

However, for now it seems that Alderweireld will be the talented latest player to join the ever-growing Bundesliga.

A number of big names could make their way to Germany this summer, particularly with the high-profile arrival of former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.
