One of the biggest horse racing meetings of them all – Royal Ascot – gets underway on Tuesday and day one of this famous festival is always a scintillating watch.
We are treated to three Group One races on the opening day as the Queen Anne Stakes, King’s Stand Stakes and St James’s Palace Stakes take place.
That isn’t all though as the Coventry Stakes is the Group Two encounter getting underway, the Ascot Stakes is a Handicap event and we also have one Listed race, which is the Windsor Castle Stakes.
Of them all though, the highlight for many is the St James’s Palace Stakes and that isn’t much of a surprise when you look at the quality in the field for this one.
What many are expecting is an epic battle between Dawn Approach and Magician in this one mile race and these two talented horses are at the front of the betting, but it is the former who is considered the 11/8 favourite.
We last saw Jim Bolger’s charge flopping in the Epsom Derby as he came dead last, but that was over a mile-and-a-half and this trip over one mile should suit the three-year-old.
The run at Epsom was a big disappointment, but Dawn Approach has won his seven other races, so can’t be overlooked and he does of course have the know how here at Royal Ascot.
As for Magician, he comes from Aidan O’Brien’s yard and has won his last two races, so 11/4 could be good value in this horse.
He has had long to rest than Dawn Approach as well and could prove to be a popular bet.
Another horse that could be involved is 7/2 shot Toronado, but a big run is needed.
The other contenders include Mars at 14/1 and Dundonnell at 20/1. The rest of the field is at 33/1 and over.
The Queen Anne Stakes will be the first race of Royal Ascot and this one mile encounter has a strong field, but Animal Kingdom is the big favourite to come out on top at 5/6. The five-year-old hasn’t been in action on British soil as yet, but has a superb record and will be tough to beat at Ascot.
However, some might feel as though Animal Kingdom is a bit short and that Elusive Kate and Declaration of War are betting value at 8/1.
Both of these horses have a lot of quality and could cause a bit of a surprise in the opening race of the day.
As for the King’s Stand Stakes, this is run over just five furlongs, so will only last around a minute, but will be an enthralling watch.
Shea Shea is being tipped as the favourite for this one at 2/1, but once again, there might be more value in the contenders and the likes of Reckless Abandon and Sole Power look a good bet right now at 13/2 and 10/1 respectively.
The Coventry Stakes – which Dawn Approach won last year – takes place after the King’s Stands and in truth, the favourite Stubbs looks as though he is going to be tough to beat after two wins already this year.
O’Brien’s horse can be backed at 2/1 to win this one and when looking at the field, you would say he should have the quality to win this one.
These are the four big races of the day, but punters can still enjoy a bet on the Ascot Stakes and Windsor Castle Stakes as there looks to be some strong horses on show.
Bring on a superb day of action at Royal Ascot and when looking at the races taking place, you have to say day one should set the tone for the rest of the week.
