Chelsea are closely monitoring ongoing contract talks between Real Madrid and experienced midfielder Xabi Alonso with Jose Mourinho ready to make a move for the Spanish international this summer according to the Daily Star.

The Stamford Bridge side hope to make the most of the uncertainty at the Bernabeu, with a new manager still to be appointed, and as Alonso has just a year to run on his current contract the 31 year old former Liverpool man could be available on a cut-price deal.

Re-elected president Florentino Perez is keen to tie down Alonso to a long term contract but if he can not agree terms with the World Cup winner then he will no doubt look to cash-in on his services to avoid losing such a talented player on a free transfer in twelve months time.

Alonso is thought to be one of only a handful of Real Madrid players who had a good relationship with Mourinho and could well be open to a return to the Premier League, though he may well also be open to an Anfield return if he does indeed leave Real Madrid.

Mourinho may see Alonso as an ideal injection of experience to play alongside the likes of Oscar, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata in the Blues midfield.
