Liverpool have been given fresh hope in the chase for Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel after Spanish giants Atletico Madrid ruled themselves out of the running for his signature, talkSPORT reports.

The pacy former Sevilla star has attracted the attentions of a number of clubs across Europe including Liverpool, Atletico and French giants Marseille as the Lisbon side look to ease their ever mounting off field financial difficulties.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is hoping to overhaul his squad this summer and has targeted the two-cap Spain international as the ideal man to inject some speed and danger into his midfield.

And Rodgers has seemingly been given a boost in his interest of the player as he now faces less competition to land the 25-year-old after Atletico president Enrique Cerezo all but ruled out a bid for the wide man.

“I personally do not think so, we are interested in other players,” Cerezo told Portuguese newspaper A Bola.

Capel joined up with Sporting in the summer of 2011 for a fee of just £3 million, but now the Portuguese club are hoping to cash in on him with the hope of earning nearly double what they originally paid.
