Liverpool are reportedly on red alert after Benfica forward Oscar Cardozo’s expected move to Fenerbahce failed to materialise according to talkSPORT.

The Lisbon side have demanded a fee of at least £14.5m for the 30 year old forward, who has scored regularly throughout his six season spell at the Estadio da Luz.

Brendan Rodgers may well be looking for a new striker to spearhead his attack if he fails to persuade Luis Suarez to climb down from his repeated calls to leave Anfield this summer and a move for the Paraguayan could be a sensible one to consider, and perhaps a stop gap medium term option that would be seemingly a cost effective one.

Cardozo has scored an astonishing 161 goals in 260 appearances for Benfica, helping them to numerous titles, however last season’s disastrous finale will no doubt see many of Jorge Jesus’s side look to leave the club.

Benfica looked good to wrestle the Primeira Liga title from FC Porto but saw their arch rivals pip them to the post and then lost to Chelsea in the dying minutes of the Europa League final and compounded their misery by losing the domestic cup final to Vitoria Guimaraes, conceding two late goals which led to Cardozo publicly remonstrating with Jesus for subbing him earlier in the game.

Cardozo is a forward in good form having scored 33 goals in all competitions last season. Though Brendan Rodgers has the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Fabio Borini and more than likely Iago Aspas as well, the inclusion of a proven experienced forward like Cardozo would be a good signing to make this summer.
