Chelsea are planning an audacious move to sign a trio of Real Madrid talents according to the Daily Star.

Jose Mourinho may well have only recently left the Bernabeu but he is looking to return to the Spanish giants in pursuit of three players he feels can help add quality to his Blues squad.

The 50 year old Portuguese boss’s main target is 31 year old Spanish international Xabi Alonso with Mourinho hoping to take advantage of the ongoing contract talks between the former Liverpool man and his Real Madrid side. The experienced campaigner has just a year to run on his current deal and this could make the World Cup winner a player president Floretino Perez considers offers for.

If Alonso doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal, with a contract offer reportedly on the table, then the La Liga side may be forced to sell to avoid losing a player of such magnitude leaving on a free transfer in a year’s time.

Mourinho also hopes to lure Luka Modric back to London and given that the Croatian had something of an up and down first term in Spain there is perhaps a decent chance of the former Tottenham man being tempted into a move to Stamford Bridge.

The third target is perhaps the least likely of the trio with Jose Mourinho looking to sign highly-rated French centre-back Raphael Varane, a player Real Madrid would surely not consider offers for.

The 20 year old had an excellent campaign in 2012/13 and more than repaid the faith shown in him by Mourinho and is now arguably Real Madrid’s most effective defensive option, forming a solid pairing with Sergio Ramos and forcing Pepe out of the starting eleven.

Mourinho may see Varane as a long term replacement for John Terry and the young defender is certainly one of the hottest prospects in European football and not a player Real Madrid will think about selling, especially to the club’s former boss.
