Rafa Benitez looks set to complete his first signing as Napoli boss with PSV Eindhoven midfielder Dries Mertens edging closer to agreeing a deal with the club, according to Sky Sports.

The 26-year-old had been linked with a number of clubs this summer, including being a long time target for Arsenal, but he appears to have chosen to join Rafa’s new revolution in southern Italy.

Speaking with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the player’s agent, Soren Lerby, confirmed that a deal is on the table and is just days away from being complete and he is set to put pen to paper on a five year deal.

“Napoli and PSV almost reached an agreement. And Dries agreed on 99% of a five-year deal,” he said.

“The lawyers are finalising the details, but we can say that Dries Mertens is now a Napoli player. By the weekend he should be ready to arrive in Naples.

“Napoli are a very important club and they have been showing interest for some time. Benitez has given his approval and a deal has been completed.

“Mertens wants to enjoy a great season and take an important step in his career at a club with great history like Napoli.”
