The eagerly anticipated first Test match between the British and Irish Lions and Australia takes place on Saturday from Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium  and we are all set for an enthralling 80 minutes of action Down Under.

The Lions have had a decent tour so far, winning five of their six tour matches and although they lost last time out, the squad is sure to be in good spirits and that defeat might have been the wake-up call a few of the players needed.

This is of course by far and away the biggest test of the tour so far and with this being a three-match series against the Wallabies, a good start is vital. A defeat leaves them with it all to do and a victory is all that is sure to be on Warren Gatland’s mind.

There will be an electric atmosphere inside the stadium and for many of these Lions’ players, it will be a totally new experience.

Gatland has named his side for the first Test and it is no surprise to see Captain Sam Warburton in the number-seven jersey. His leadership skills and way of dealing with the referees is going to be vital for the Lions on this tour.

Also, the experience of someone like Brian O’Driscoll will be key if the visitors are to take the spoils in this first encounter.

The surprise inclusion for Saturday’s match could be that of Alex Corbisiero as many believed Mako Vunipola would be in the front row, but the Englishman has been given the nod and will be looking to take his chance here.

When looking at the betting, you can see that the Lions are the favourites to come out on top at 4/6.

Gatland isn’t a man to allow for any complacency in his side though and he will demand 100 per cent effort from his men right from the word go.

As for Australia, they know there is big pressure on them here as no matter what the bookies say, home fans always expect their team to win on home soil.

Although the Wallabies might not be at their strongest in terms of quality in the squad, they still have a very good 15 players starting this one and the skipper, James Horwill will provide that much-needed experience.

Robbie Deans would have been watching all of the Lions’ warm-up matches and seen where his side can hurt the touring team.

Many Australian players know they aren’t going to get another chance to be involved in a series such as this one and that is likely to mean they raise their game for this one.

Many believe that at 13/8, the hosts are where the value is in this first Test.

On any tour of this magnitude, there are always going to be nerves and the team that settles quickly will have the best chance of coming out on top here.

This is one of the biggest fixtures not just in rugby union, but in British sport and all the action gets underway from 11am on Saturday.
