Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs has confessed that Danish international defender Simon Kjaer could be heading for the exit from the club this summer, Sky Sports reports.

The 24-year-old has been a target for both Liverpool and Newcastle United in recent times and the arrival of Swiss international Timm Klose from FC Nurnberg means that Kjaer may find opportunities of first-team football slightly more limited next season.

He currently has just one more year on his deal with the Bundesliga club, and Allofs admission could prompt one of the Premier League sides into making a bid for him now to snap him up on the cheap rather than risk losing out next summer when more clubs will be lining up to take him.

“I have had a chat with Simon Kjaer about his situation at the club and of course, it’s not to Simon’s satisfaction to not play regular first-team matches,”Allofs told German magazine Kicker.

“This may well, in the end, lead him to make a change.”

Kjaer joined the former Bundesliga champions from Italian side Palermo in 2010 for a deal in excess of £10 million. He arrived highly rated, but spent the 2011-12 season on loan back in Italy with Roma.
