Arsenal are ready to make their move for Man United striker Wayne Rooney according to the Daily Mail.

Arsene Wenger is closing in on the capture of Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain and hopes to bring in 27 year old Man United star Rooney to play in an attacking midfield role behind the Argentine and will mount a £20m bid for the England international.

One would imagine it would take a bid well in excess of £20m to land Man United’s fourth highest goal-scorer of all time but Wenger has been given the all clear to offer £220k a week to the Old Trafford star, more than double what Arsenal’s top earners are Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski currently paid.

Wenger sees Rooney as a player he can use to link midfield and attack but this may not address one of the apparent key reasons for the Man United’s reported verbal transfer request, which was due in part to his having a less advanced spot in Man United’s attack since the arrival of Robin Van Persie last summer.

The likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid, both said to be keen on Wayne Rooney, may well be able to offer even more and could perhaps be seen as a more viable option for the Man United forward given Arsenal’s lengthy spell without silverware.

Arsenal do however have the funds to invest in the transfer market this summer, due chiefly to big money sponsorship deals with the likes of Emirates and Puma.

Gunners fans will hope that Wenger manages to bring in the top level additions needed to mount a genuine push for major honours.
