Barcelona are desperate not to lose Thiago Alcantara to Manchester United this summer, and will attempt to persuade him to stay at the club with the promise of more regular first-team football, according to the Guardian.

The 22-year-old is one of the most highly rated youngsters to come through the club’s famous La Masia youth academy, but has found himself on the bench for much of the last few years due to the immense competition for places at the Nou Camp.

Alcantara currently has the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas to contend with in Barcelona’s midfield, and has grown frustrated with his lack of action, which has seen several of Europe’s top clubs look to tempt him away.

United are believed to be leading the chase for the £17million-valued player, and the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich have also been monitoring his situation.

However, despite reports that a move to Old Trafford is close, he could still be swayed into remaining with the Catalan giants, as they will look to offer him a guarantee of more first-team football next season.

The talented midfielder scored a hat-trick for the Spain Under-21 side in their 4-2 win in the final of this summer’s European Championships in Israel, which may have got him more into the mind of Barca boss Tito Vilanova.
