Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has lined up Brighton boss Gus Poyet to takeover if Alan Pardew leaves the club, reports the Sunday People.

Speculation has mounted that Pardew could leave the club following the appointment of Joe Kinnear as director of football, something not many people saw coming, including Pardew.

The former West Ham boss is unhappy that he will now have to report to Kinnear and is reportedly considering his options.

Kinnear announced that he was becoming director of football last week before the club could announce it, causing surprise and in some quarters dismay, especially during a radio interview that Kinnear gave in which he pronounced the names of some Newcastle players wrongly.

Ashley has reportedly sort advice from his friend Dennis Wise about who should replace Pardew if the manager decides to leave St James Park.

Wise is thought to have recommended Brighton manager Gus Poyet, who is currently suspended at the Amex following comments he made after Brighton’s play-off defeat to Crystal Palace.

Wise is figure of hate around Newcastle following his time as director of football at the club and fans will worry that he could be back at St James Park if Poyet is installed as manager.
