Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has denied that goalkeeper Pepe Reina will be leaving the club this summer, Sky Sports reports.

The Reds are on the verge of signing Sunderland stopper Simon Mignolet, and the Spanish international has been linked numerous times with a switch to Barcelona as a replacement for Victor Valdes.

Reina is currently in Brazil with the national team competing in the Confederations Cup, and at the weekend insisted that he welcomed the impending arrival of Mignolet as competition was needed ay the club, and his manager reiterated his desire to see him stay and help re-establish the side at the top of the tree again.

“One of the things we’re trying to build is a competitive squad,” Rodgers said.

“Our squad was very thin last year. It’s very important we have competition in every position and that wasn’t always the case.

“Pepe and I went out for a meal a couple of months before the end of the season and I told him exactly what we were going to do, which was to provide real competition in that area.

“Pepe is a fantastic goalkeeper but Simon Mignolet is a player that has done really well. He’s also part of an emerging Belgium squad that has come into a golden era.

“Pepe is a very committed man and an outstanding goalkeeper.”
