Liverpool have officially confirmed the signing of Sunderland keeper Simon Mignolet.

The 25 year old Belgian completed a medical and signed a long term contract last night and will now look to challenge Pepe Reina for the starting spot in Brendan Rodgers first eleven.

Liverpool are said to have paid £9m for the Black Cats custodian and Mignolet becomes the club’s fourth signing of the summer following Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas to the Merseyside outfit.

Sunderland signed Mignolet in a £2m deal from Sint-Truiden in June 2010 and has proven a very wise addition, becoming the Black Cats regular and forcing Scot Craig Gordon out of the first team set-up fairly swiftly.

Mignolet will hope that a high profile move to Merseyside can aid his push to unseat Chelsea youngster Thibaut Courtois to become the Belgian number one national team starter.

Simon Mignolet racked up 101 appearances for Sunderland over the course of his three seasons at the Stadium of Light.
