Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Malaga midfielder Isco according to Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Manchester City were thought to be favourites to sign the Spanish under-21 star where he was expected to reunite with his former mentor at Malaga and new City boss, Manuel Pellegrini.

Rumours that Isco might actually turn down City began to emerge over the last few days but City remained favourites to sign the player.

It was understood that Isco was not keen on a move to Real Madrid as he did not believe he would feature prominently in the first team and he is keen to play regular football as he looks to establish himself in the Spain squad for next summer’s World Cup finals tournament in Brazil.

But it has since been reported that Real Madrid special advisor, Zinedine Zidane, personally intervened and reassured Isco that he would have a key role within the Real Madrid setup.

That appears to have turned the player’s head and it now looks like he will join up with the Galaticos once he has completed a medical.

His arrival will mark the first signing under new Italian boss Carlo Ancelotti since he arrived from Ligue 1 champions PSG.
