Arsenal are worried that they are set to miss out in the race to sign Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain and Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney according to The Daily Star.

The Gunners have been closely linked with the pair over the last couple of months as they make bringing in attacking reinforcements their top priority.

The club suffered for firepower last season following the departure of Robin Van Persie to Manchester United and the disappointing debut seasons of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski.

That almost cost them dear as they secured a top four finish by just a point and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to avoid a repeat in the upcoming season.

The club were thought to be favourites to sign Higuain but it now appears that they face stiff competition from Serie A giants Juventus and North London rivals Tottenham.

Their interest in Wayne Rooney also looks set to fade as the club are unwilling to smash their wage structure in order to accommodate the striker’s pay demands.

That could pave the way for Arsenal to miss out on the pair, despite supposedly being willing to splash the cash this summer.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to spend big in order to re-establish themselves as genuine Premier League title contenders after finally paying off the loan they took out to build the Emirates.
