Derby County boss Nigel Clough is hoping to snap up veteran defender Richard Dunne following his recent release from Aston Villa, according to Sky Sports.

The 33-year-old didn’t kick a ball for Villa last season after missing out through injury, though he made his competitive comeback earlier this month during the Republic of Ireland’s game against Georgia.

Clough has recognised that the former Manchester City man will be hoping to stay in the top flight, but he couldn’t help but admit that he is exactly the type of player that he’ll be looking to sign this summer.

“We know he’s been released by Aston Villa and we’ve heard he wants to stay in the Premier League,” said Clough in the Derby Evening Telegraph.

“He’s that kind of ‘Jake Buxton’ centre-half we like.

“If the possibility became available down the line, we would look at it. But I think he will be looking to stay in the league above for now.”

Dunne made over 110 appearances for Villa over a four-year spell, scoring four goals. During his penultimate season he was considered to be a disruptive influence in the dressing room when he and fellow Villa stopper James Collins caused a ruckus during a team getaway.
