The Daily Mirror claim that incoming Old Trafford boss David Moyes is closing in on deals to sign a defensive pair that he hopes can solidify his Man United defence.

Moyes officially begins his Man United reign today and has been given the go ahead to finally land £17m rated Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay, who has reportedly been lined up as a signing for the Premier League title holders for some weeks.

The 26 year old has seen his career re-ignited at Benfica following an unsuccessful spell at Real Madrid and is perhaps seen as an ideal man to lead the Man United defence in the long term given that Rio Ferdinand at 34 isn’t getting any younger and Nemanja Vidic continues to struggle with injuries.

David Moyes is also closing in on a deal to sign Everton full-back Leighton Baines with the club’s opening £12m offer having been turned down by the Scot’s former Goodison Park employers.

The Daily Mail claim that Man United are willing to up their offer to £20m, a fee that Everton chairman Bill Kenwright will probably find hard to turn down.

Man United are ready to allow Patrice Evra to re-join AS Monaco if they do indeed successfully lure Baines to Old Trafford.
