Newcastle United Director of Football Joe Kinnear has urged the club’s owner, Mike Ashely, to help him secure his first signing at the club by Friday according to The Journal.

Kinnear has been working with the club’s chief scout Graham Carr and manager Alan Pardew in a surprising display of unity at the club.

Kinnear’s arrival at the club prompted ridicule in the press and led to the resignation of former managing director Derek Llambias after Kinnear gave a surreal interview with talkSport where he got a number of the player’s names wrong and massively exaggerated his responsibilities at the club.

It was suggested that Pardew and Carr could follow Llambias out of the St James Park exit door but it appears that the trio are working together to bring in new signings to the club.

Top of their list is thought to be St Etienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but the French club know there is a lot of interest in the player and are holding out for £17 million.

Kinnear knows that is probably an overvaluation of the player but has urged Ashley to give the club a boost by announcing a new signing at the club.

Should they fail in their bid to secure Aubameyang’s signature, it is thought that the club will turn to Villa’s Darren Bent.
