Carles Puyol has said that he is eyeing a contract extension at Barcelona and rejected speculation that he could be forced to retire following more surgery on his troublesome right knee, Goal.com reports.

The defender had to have a fourth operation on his right knee at the end of the season and reports suggested that he could look to retire from football.

However, Puyol has said that he hasn’t considered retiring and hopes instead to continue playing a big role in Barcelona’s first team.

Puyol stated defiantly: “Now is not the time. I will not retire. Right now I feel I want to fulfill my contract and if I can, make it longer.

“I am recovering slowly but progressing very well. This operation is not like the others: the post-operative period is more painful but the recovery is faster”.

Puyol did admit that he may call time on his international career with Spain, saying he will do what is best for Barcelona.

The 35 year old has been at Barcelona for all of his career and has enjoyed a huge amount of success with the club.

Barcelona missed Puyol’s presence in central defence last season, with the Spanish Champions making many sloppy errors in defence that cost them vital goals.

The club are looking to sign a regular central defensive partner for Gerard Pique in Puyol’s absence and have targeted PSG defender Thiago Silva.
