The agent of former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has hit out at Monaco over their handling of the discussions between themselves and the player, according to Sky Sports.

The 33-year-old had been offered an ambassadorial role with Barcelona but he had been hoping to prolong his playing career back in France with the likes of Lyon, Nice and Paris Saint Germain all credited with an interest, but it was big spending Monaco who had been thought to be in pole position.

However, they now appear to have dropped out of the race to acquire his services leaving Abidal and his representative, David Venditelli, frustrated.

“I no longer have any news from Monaco,” Venditelli, said in French newspaper L’Equipe.

“The way they handled the case is disturbing, and was up to the limit of being disrespectful.

“Monaco had the opportunity to show that they were not just a club interested in money by taking a free player. They did not do so.

“I respect their sporting choice of not going for Eric Abidal. What I do not accept is the way people are treated.”

Abidal does, though, still have a number of clubs still interest in signing him and is not thought to be left hanging around for too long as the new season fast approaches.
