Southampton have stepped up their interest in Internacional striker Leandro Damiao following the news that Tottenham have pulled out of the running to sign the Brazilian attacker, claim the London Evening Standard.

Spurs ended their two-year pursuit of the striker as they deem the asking price too high. The Brazilian club are looking for around £21million for their prized asset. Damiao’s agent Jorge Machado claim an ‘unnamed’ Premier League club are in negotiations for his client, believed to be Southampton.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino believes that Damiao is the right man to lead the line at Saint Mary’s, following the mass exodus of strikers at the club, which include Billy Sharp and Tadanari Lee, with both Jonathan Forte and Lee Barnard expected to follow suit, leaving only Ricky Lambert and Jay Rodriguez as their main striking options, as Emmanuel Mayuka was used sparingly during his first season in the Premier League.

Tottenham are in need of a new striker, following the news that Emmanuel Adebayor looks set to leave the club, with Besiktas the favourites to sign him. Sours are said to be interested in Barcelona forward David Villa. The 31-year old is attracting the interest of Tottenham, along with Arsenal and Liverpool, but all three clubs are unwilling to meet the £9million demanded by the Spanish champions to sign the talismanic forward.

Inter Milan are also said to be interested in Damiao, 23, but are also reluctant to meet the asking price.
