Arsenal are ready to offer Wayne Rooney a £250k a week wage packet and a long term deal as Arsene Wenger looks to pull out all the stops in pursuit of the Man United star.

The Gunners will hope to bring in Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain next week but see Wayne Rooney as an additional target and not as an alternative to the Argentine.

Wenger knows that he will have to put in a big money offer to tempt the 27 year old England man to issue an official transfer request and will also have to beat Chelsea to the signature of the unhappy Man United striker who is in something of a state of limbo at Old Trafford.

The former Everton man is said to be angered by suggestions that he put in a verbal request to leave Man United at the end of last season and has demanded the club clarify the situation but whilst incoming boss David Moyes stated that the player was not for sale no move was made to extricate Rooney from the difficult position he finds himself in.

Man United fans are unlikely to be impressed by reports that Rooney wants to leave the club, after all the striker made a similar statement a few years back and was only persuaded to stay when offered a massive pay-rise, something that is unlikely to be replicated by the Premier League title holders this time around.

Arsene Wenger has been handed a massive transfer fund, said to be in the region of £70m, and has been told he can smash the club’s wage structure and will hope to tempt Rooney into a move to the capital.

The Arsenal boss will look to make room for attacking additions by offloading a number of players with the likes of Marouane Chamakh, Nicklas Bendtner, Park Chu-Young and Gervinho likely to leave.

Rooney may well not have been happy about being used in a more withdrawn striking role last season, to accommodate Robin Van Persie’s arrival and Wenger would certainly be able to offer the Man United man a central striking role where he may look to partner the England star alongside Higuain.

Wayne Rooney has netted 197 goals in 400 appearances for Man United, only Jack Rowley, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton have scored move for the club.
