Tottenham are ready to play the waiting game to sign Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke and they are confident they will get their man according to The Sun.

Spurs have made bringing in attacking reinforcements a top priority this summer after struggling for goals from their strikers last season.

Jermain Defoe started last season in blistering form but struggled to hit the back of the net following the turn of the year while Togo international Manu Adebayor angered many Spurs fans for his lacklustre performances after signing a permanent deal from Manchester City.

That has been enough to persuade Spurs boss Andre Vilas-Boas that the club need to invest in the position and they have reportedly made Benteke one of their top targets.

Benteke was in sensational form in his debut season in the Premier League last year and hit the back of the net on 23 separate occasions.

Aston Villa have insisted that Benteke is not for sale, and have claimed they would not consider any bids under the £30 million.

But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is ready to test their resolve and is relying on Benteke’s desire to move to a bigger club to help him out.

Benteke is thought to be ready to seek a move elsewhere as he hopes to improve his chances of making the Belgian team for next summer’s World Cup.
