Man United have joined an ever growing band of clubs pursuing 6ft 5in Inter Milan centre-back Andrea Ranocchia as David Moyes looks to bring in a much needed central defensive addition.

Corriere dello Sport believe Man United will challenge Tottenham, Arsenal and Serie A title holders Juventus for the 25 year old Italian international who is said to have a €15m (£12.9m) price-tag.

Ranocchia may well consider leaving the San Siro having seen the Nerazzurri continue to struggle, finishing last term in ninth place, the Italian giants worse finish in almost two decades.

Moyes knows that veteran Rio Ferdinand is in the latter stages of his career and captain Nemanja Vidic continues to struggle with injuries whilst youngster Phil Jones may actually better suit a defensive midfield role. This would leave the vastly improved Jonny Evans and England man Chris Smalling as other options for the incoming Scottish boss to choose from.

Ranocchia has completed three seasons at Inter Milan and is now a regular in Cesare Prandelli’s Italian national team set-up but knows that a high profile move to Man United could assist in his chances of a more prominent role, not least because his current side doesn’t even have European football to offer the former Genoa man in 2013/14.
