Brazilian striker on verge of joining Italian side Napoli.

Check in to Transfer Window: Done Deal Alerts

Premier League teams were facing up to disappointment last night after Brazilian striker Leandro Damiao was revealed to be close to signing for Napoli according to Sky Sports.

A number of Premier League sides were thought to be keen on the player with Tottenham and Southampton thought to be leading the chase for his signature.

Spurs were understood to be close to signing Damiao during the previous January transfer window, only for a potential move to break down after the two clubs failed to agree a fee.

It was thought that Tottenham would return for the player this summer but they appear to have been more focused on other targets.

That led to some suggestions that Southampton were ready to storm in and make an ambitious bid for the striker but it now appears that their hopes have been dashed with the Brazilian seemingly headed for Italy.

Damiao is expected to join Napoli, who finished second last year in Serie A, as replacement for the PSG-bound Edinson Cavani.

It is understood that new Napoli manager Rafa Benitez was desperate to bring Damiao to Napoli with a transfer fee being reported in the region of £18 million.

Napoli will be hoping that Damiao can get off to a good start and soften the blow of losing Cavani.
