All eyes head to Trent Bridge on Wednesday morning as the first Test match of the Investec Ashes gets underway and as ever, we are all set for an enthralling five days of action between England and Australia in the biggest Test series of them all.
These two teams will do battle in five Tests this summer, before another five in Australia over the winter, so it is a massive few months for both the Three Lions and the Aussies to show just how good they can be.
Given the players in their squad and the fact they are on home soil, it isn’t much of a surprise to see England as the 10/11 favourites to take a 1-0 lead here at Trent Bridge and with the weather looking good, we shouldn’t lose out on any cricket.
Alastair Cook will captain the side for the first time in an Ashes series, but when you consider the way he has handled the role so far, he is sure to be relishing the chance to lead his team to glory.
With the bat, Cook needs to set the standard at the top of the innings and this is also a massive encounter for Kevin Pietersen as he is set to return to Test cricket. The batsman will be looking to show he is still one of the best players around and he is a 4/1 shot to be England’s leading scorer at Trent Bridge.
With the ball, it is going to be down to James Anderson to lead the attack once more, but he needs plenty of support from the likes of Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann.
If England can play at their best in this first Test and cope with the pressure of being the favourites, then they should come out on top.
As for Australia, they are not used to coming to England and being tipped as the underdogs to win the Ashes, but that is the case this time out and they have to prove a few people wrong this summer.
Michael Clarke is the skipper for the touring side of course and much like Cook, he has to set an example with the bat.
This Aussie side simply isn’t as strong as it has been in the past, but you cannot write them off as they have a number of match-winners in the squad and might even suit being the underdogs.
As it often is, a good start is key and Clarke will be looking for a big performance from his men here at Trent Bridge. If you think the away side can take a 1-0 lead, then you can back them at 10/3, which could be a popular bet.
There is nothing quite like the first morning of an Ashes series and the atmosphere on Wednesday is sure to be electric. Both teams have to put their nerves and excitement to one side though as the first day can set the tone for the summer.
Bring on the action from 11am.
