Mega-rich Manchester City are understood to be interested in signing coveted Fiorentina front man Stevan Jovetic this summer, according to reports in the Sun.

The highly talented Montenegro international has been the subject of intense speculation of late linking the player with a possible big-money move away from Serie A when the transfer window reopened at the start of this month, with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal also both known to be keen on the centre forward.

However, it now appears as though it is big-spending City who stolen a march on their Premier League rivals by preparing to meet the £27 million release clause in the 23-year-old’s current contract in Florence, which runs until June 30 2016.

Jovetic, who has been with Fiorentina for the past five seasons now, is currently regarded as being one of the most impressive forwards plying their trade on the Continent, having netted 40 goals overall in his 134 matches in all competitions for his Italian club, including 35 strikes in his 116 league outings.

And it would be a major transfer coup for new City head coach Manuel Pellegrini were he able to beat off the challenge of both Chelsea and Arsenal this summer in order to bring Jovetic to Eastlands as a replacement for the recently departed attacker Carlos Tevez.
