Chelsea look set to miss out on the signing of Napoli’s Edinson Cavani as PSG moved closer to completing a deal according to The Express.

The Uruguayan striker has been one of the hottest properties in football this summer with a number of top sides vying for his services.

The likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have all been linked with a move for the forward whose goals fired Napoli into second place last season in Serie A.

But a move has seemed certain, ever since Napoli President Aurelio Di Laurentiis confirmed the existence of a minimum fee release clause in the player’s contract.

Napoli had remained hopeful of hanging onto the player as the clause is thought to be somewhere in the region of £54 million but the high price was not enough to prevent mega-bucks PSG.

Chelsea were thought to be in advanced negotiations with Napoli over a deal but are understood to have been unwilling to meet the full amount required by the clause.

The Stamford Bridge side were hoping to persuade Napoli to accept a deal involving a player in part-exchange however the Italian giants were not receptive to the idea and that has allowed PSG to swoop in and secure a deal for the striker.
