Spanish source Sport.es today reports that Man United target Thiago Alcantara has turned down the opportunity of a controversial move to Real Madrid and is set to complete his long awaited move to Old Trafford.

The 22 year old midfielder, who enjoyed a hugely successful European Under 21 Championships last month, is now almost certain to leave the Nou Camp and could well be the first major signing of the David Moyes regime with a move set to be sealed in the coming days.

The Spanish international will cost Man United around €18m (£15.4m), which is the fee that will trigger the youngster’s release clause.

Alcantara is a player Moyes clearly wants to bring in to help strengthen and freshen up a midfield that looked brittle last term. Paul Scholes has retired, Darren Fletcher is still recovering from long term illness and Anderson may well be sold.

The incoming Man United boss may well look to partner the industrious youngster alongside veteran Michael Carrick in the centre of his Man United midfield.

Thiago Alcantara started just 15 of Barcelona’s 38 La Liga fixtures last term and has made a total of 98 appearances for Barcelona since making his debut in May 2009.
