Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their interest in Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic according to the Daily Mail.

The 23 year-old is deeply admired by Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas who sent scouts to monitor his progress with Roma last season. Although, Spanish giants Barcelona are tracking the Bosnian footballer, who was quoted telling reporters “it’s true, Barcelona are tracking me and enquired about my situation with my club [Roma].”

Despite the recent arrival of Lewis Holtby in January, and Moussa Dembele last summer, Villas Boas is still looking to add another playmaker, like Pjanic, to his squad.

Arsenal have previously been linked with the midfielder, prior to signing Santi Cazorla. The Roma man told reporters he was to join Arsenal from Lyon, back in 2011, before they turned their attention and he moved to the Italian capital.

Tottenham are desperately trying to keep hold of Welsh superstar Gareth Bale, who is being targeted by Real Madrid and Manchester United. Although reports claim £80million offers are to be made, Daniel Levy has reiterated that the 23 year-old winger will not be leaving Spurs this summer as they push for Champions League football.

Gareth may be forced to accept a move next summer if Spurs do fail to qualify for the Champions League again, which is why Villas Boas and Levy are trying their hardest to get their business done early to prevent any upsets.

Last week Tottenham confirmed their first signing of the window, Brazilian midfielder Paulinho from Corinthians, for £17million. The South American broke down in tears in his final farewell press conference for Corinthians a few days before he put pen to paper at White Hart Lane.
