Manchester City are preparing to make a move for Real Madrid star Cristano Ronaldo and could hijack a deal that rivals Manchester United have been trying to complete for months, the Daily Star reports.

Reports have linked Ronaldo with a return to United this summer following the problems that he is having at current club Real Madrid.

Ronaldo’s contract expires in two years and Madrid are desperately trying to get the Portuguese winger to sign a contract extension, without any success.

Now Manchester City could enter the race to sign the winger, who spent six highly successful seasons at Manchester United, winning the Premier League three times and the Champions League.

The Sky Blues have told Ronaldo’s representatives that they will beat any financial offer that United put to the winger, meaning they are likely to pay Ronaldo more than £300,000 a week.

Should Ronaldo decide to leave Old Trafford, the pull of his former club is likely to very enticing for Ronaldo but City’s officials are deadly serious about their interest.

Optimism has grown at Old Trafford that they could pull off the stunning coup of re-signing Ronaldo but the interest from City is likely to worry United fans.
