Everton have set their sights on a pair of high-level signings as Roberto Martinez looks to continue his summer spending spree according to the Sunday Mirror.

The former Latics boss has made a £12m offer for his former midfielder James McCarthy but has been told that the DW Stadium want to make £20m from any potential sale of the Republic of Ireland international, a fee that the Toffees may well decline to fork out for the young battler.

Martinez has also targeted Juventus forward Alessandro Matri but has been told that the Goodison Park side would have to spend £14m to land the Italian international, again a fee that could be considered more than just a little inflated.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright is not known for spending beyond the club’s means and having already brought in Arouna Kone, Joel Robles and Antolin Alcaraz there is every chance that further additions would have to be covered by player sales with the likes of Leighton Baines and Maroaune Fellaini continuing to be linked with big money exits.

Interest in Matri will no doubt be an attempt to boost the Everton attack who had to depend a great deal on goals from their midfield last term. 28 year old Marti struggled to secure a regular spot in the Juventus attack last term and the arrival of Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente could be the death knell for his career at the Turin side.
