Tottenham Hotspur are trying to sell striker Emmanuel Adebayor as the club push ahead with plans to sign Aston Villa striker Christan Benteke, the Daily Mirror reports.

Spurs are desperate for funds to make a bid for Benteke and selling Adebayor would help to fund the move but the club are struggling to sell the striker.

They thought Adebayor was close to moving to Besiktas for £6 million and the Turkish club was even prepared to pay the strikers £100,000 a week contract but the player is refusing to make the move.

This is frustrating Spurs, who are desperate to make a move for Benteke before Chelsea do.

Benteke’s international team mate, Eden Hazard is trying to persuade the striker to join him at Chelsea and Spurs are worried that it won’t take much persuading before Benteke decides to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

Reports suggest that Chelsea are willing to pay the £25 million that Villa are demanding but Benteke is sceptical about how many first team opportunities he would get at the Blues.

Benteke handed in a transfer request last week and Villa are demanding that interested clubs pay them £25 million for the Belgian international.
