Newly appointed Everton boss, Roberto Martinez, plans to continue his summer revamp by signing a new centre back with Norwich target as his priority according to Dutch source Telegraaf.

Former-Wigan manager, Martinez, wishes to sign Ajax central defender Toby Alderweireld amid interest from Premier League side Norwich City.

Chris Hughton [Norwich boss] had managed to agree a fee with Ajax, before the Belgian defender put the proposed move on hold as he awaits an offer from a ‘bigger club’. Although Toby did appear to be holding out for Liverpool, he may still get his switch to Merseyside but to the Toffees instead.

“I am still at Ajax and I am happy here, maybe I will stay for a year,” Toby told AT5 [Dutch TV channel].

“With every bid that comes, I see if it is good for me. Whether I will stay or not is something we’ll have to see about. I’m not saying ‘no’ in advance to Norwich, but I am certainly not saying ‘yes’ immediately. Maybe I will stay a year, which could be for the best. The overall picture has to be right for me. Maybe that will be Norwich City or any other club.”

Reports in Holland claim Eredivisie giants, Ajax, have told Everton to offer their asking price of €8million, which they agreed with Norwich already.

On the other hand, Everton have also been linked with Porto defender Rolando recently, but it appears Newcastle may be closer to wrapping up a deal for the Portuguese centre half instead.
