Sunderland are set to announce the signing of Italian international Emanuele Giaccherini according to The Chronicle.

The 28 year old Juventus midfielder has passed a medical and the Serie A champions have agreed a £8.5m deal that will see the former Cesena man move to the Stadium of Light.

Giaccherini will be the Black Cats ninth signing of a very busy summer following Valentin Roberge, Modibo Diakite, Cabral, Jozy Altidore , Vito Mannone , David Moberg Karlsson, El-Hadji Ba and Duncan Watmore to the North-East club.

Emanuele Giaccherini was part of Cesare Prandelli’s Italian squad at the recent Confederations Cup tournament in Brazil but was something of a bit part player in Antonio Conte’s Juventus side, making just ten Serie A starts last term and only nine in the previous campaign.

Paolo Di Canio has clearly received strong financial backing from owner Ellis Short and the controversial Italian boss is certainly assembling a quality squad that should, in theory, be pushing towards the top half of the Premier League table in 2013/14.

Giaccherini moved to Turin in August 2011 in a move that cost Juventus a total of around £6m.
