Chelsea are weighing up their options after being told to stump up £80 million if they hope to sign Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney according to The Sun.

New Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho is known to be firm admirer of the England star and has been monitoring his situation closely in recent weeks.

The Portuguese boss has been placed on red alert after sources close to Rooney made it clear he is ready to leave Old Trafford.

Rooney is thought to have been furious about comments United boss David Moyes made a few days ago, where he stated that the striker was only essential to the club if Robin Van Persie was injured.

It was perhaps intended as a challenge to Rooney to step up his game but the player has reportedly had enough of life with the Premier League champions and is ready for a new challenge elsewhere.

Rooney will not come cheap though, at least not this summer, as he still has two years remaining on his current deal at the club.

United are likely to demand a transfer fee around the £28 million mark while Rooney’s huge £200,000 a week could cost the club well over £50 million should he sign a five year deal.
