Liverpool want to sign highly rated Atletico Mineiro midfeld player Bernard this summer, according to reports in the Daily Telegraph.

The young Brazil international, who is currently back in his homeland preparing for the Copa Libertadores final, has been the subject of much speculation of late linking him with a possible £20 million move to the Continent now that the summer transfer window has finally reopened for business.

However, it had looked like that either Tottenham Hotspur or Arsenal were in pole position to land the exciting 20-year-old, that is until the Reds joined the race for his signature.

Bernard has been with Atletico Mineiro for his whole career to date, making his debut for the Belo Horizonte-based side back in 2011, and in the mean time the wide man has featured in 97 matches for his club in all competitions, and scoring 21 goals in the process.

And Bernard’s form over the past few years has been so eye catching that it has also resulted in the player receiving his first call-up to the Brazil national team last year, with the winger having gone on to win five capos for the Selecao.

But if the Merseyside giants do want to bring Bernard to Anfield next season, then they will first have to meet the player’s buy-out clause of £20m in his current contract with Atletico Mineiro.
