Liverpool Launch £12m Bid for Bundesliga Centre-Back as Brendan Rodgers Looks to Strengthen Defence

Anfield side target highly rated Schalke defender.

Liverpool have reportedly made a £12m bid for highly rated Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos according to German source Bild.

The offer for the 21 year old Greek international comes some way below the Bundesliga side’s £18.9m valuation though it may be a bid that the Gelsenkirchen side considers given the ongoing injury issues the youngster is currently suffering, largely due to a troublesome knee issue that has delayed his pre-season training sessions.

Brendan Rodgers has brought in Kolo Toure to strengthen his defence but may well feel he needs to bring in other options given his apparent issue with Slovakian Martin Skrtel, who was frozen out of first team action for much of the second half of the last campaign.

Jamie Carragher has of course hung up his boots and Uruguayan youngster Sebastian Coates is perhaps not ready for a regular run in the Liverpool first team so one can see why the Anfield boss would be interested in Papadopoulos, who has made almost 100 appearances for Schalke since joining the club from Olympiakos in June 2010.

Given that Liverpool have already signed the aforementioned Toure, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Simon Mignolet one would imagine that further additions may well have to be financed by further sales though Rodgers has made good use of the cash raised by the summer sales of Jonjo Shelvey and Andy Carroll to Swansea City and West Ham respectively.
