In-and-out winger does not want to give up on his Reds career just yet.

Liverpool wide man Stewart Downing says that he has absolutely no intention whatsoever of leaving Anfield this summer, reports the Daily Mail.

The inconsistent England international has been the subject of a recent £8 million bid for his services from fellow Premier League outfit West Ham United.

However, when told of the offer the 28-year-old informed the Reds that he wanted to stay on Merseyside and fight for his first-team spot next season.

This situation, of course, is nothing new to the player, who this time last year was also facing question marks about his Reds future after new Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers told Downing that he would not be part of his first-team plans at the club going forward.

And yet the winger simply got his head down, worked even harder in training and ultimately proved the Northern Irishman wrong in his views, with Downing even going on to enjoy his most successful period at Anfield since joining the club from Aston Villa for £20 million in July 2011.

In total, Downing featured in 45 matches overall in all competitions in the previous campaign, registering five goals and nine assists along the way, including three goals and five assists in his 29 Premier League outings for the Reds.

“I feel settled now,” said Downing. “The first year was difficult but once I established myself in the team last season I really enjoyed it. We played really well as a team and that helped me. You could see signs that if we play like that consistently then we’ll have a real chance this season.

“That’s why I didn’t want to leave. If you are playing with good players in a good team then you don’t want to lose that. My aim this season is to play well and stay in the team. I’ve only got two years left on my contract so that will be up for renewal soon so I’ve got plenty left to play for.

“I got a good run at it after Christmas and now I just want to carry on. I have to make sure I stay in the team. Some new players have come in and obviously a few more will arrive. I they do, so be it. I am ready for what’s coming.”
