Chelsea will make front man Wayne Rooney their highest-paid player in an effort to convince the unsettled Manchester United  star to move to Stamford Bridge this summer, according to reports in the London Evening Standard.

The England international is currently the subject of much speculation linking the player with a possible big-money move away from Old Trafford, with the west London club having had an offer of £27 million for the 27-year-old rejected by the Premier League champions on Thursday.

However, it is understood that Blues head coach Jose Mourinho is desperate to bring the highly rated centre forward to Stamford Bridge next season in order to lead the line in the capital, and the Portuguese is willing to pay Rooney a weekly salary of £200,000 in order to convince the player to make the controversial mood.

And that would elevate Rooney above the likes of even club captain John Terry and Fernando Torres (£175,000 pw) in the Blues’ salary stakes, which may raise some eyebrows in the Chelsea dressing-room next season.

But Mourinho feels that striker, who has scored an impressive 197 goals in just 400 matches for United since joining the club in 2004, will be worth the eye-catching financial figures, with Chelsea expected to make a second improved offer for Rooney within the coming days.
