Sunderland are expected to complete the £5million signing of Argentine full-back Gino Peruzzi later today according to the Daily Mail.

The Velez Sarsfield defender will be become Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio’s tenth summer signing after arriving in Wearside to finalise personal terms.

The youngster began last season in the Argentine Premier League playing on the right wing and he can also fit in as a left-back but it is on the right hand side of defence where he has excelled for club and country.

With four international caps for Argentina and renowned for his attacking style at right-back, Peruzzi is likely to replace long serving defender Phil Bardsley at the Stadium of the Light after the Scotland international very publicly fell out with Di Canio last season.

After being confronted by Di Canio over an incident in a casino late last season, Bardsley has been told that he has no future at the club and was left at home when the squad departed for a pre-season training camp earlier last week.

His replacement Peruzzi was recognised as key transfer target by the former Swindon manager at the start of a busy summer of upheaval but the process to bring him to the North East has been a protracted affair.

However after passing a medical, the 21-year-old is expected to fly out to Hong Kong with the rest of the Black Cats squad for the Barclays Asia Trophy where they face Manchester City and Tottenham next week

The Black Cats completed the transfer of £8.5m Italian winger Emanuele Giaccherini yesterday and the winger made his debut during his new side’s 1-0 win over Swiss side FC Chiasso last night.
