Chelsea are set to tempt Manchester United by offering the club £40 million for want away striker Wayne Rooney, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The Blues recently had an offer of below £25 million rejected by Manchester United, who are insisting that they won’t sell the England international this summer.

However, their attitude might change should Chelsea offer them £40 million, a bid that would be well above Rooney’s asking price following his disappointing season at Old Trafford.

Rooney has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford for most of 2013 and he has recently fallen out with manager David Moyes over comments the Scot made about Rooney only being vital if Robin Van Persie gets injured.

The striker also fell out with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson and is thought to be trying to push through a move to Chelsea.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has made it clear that Rooney is his only transfer target this summer and the Portuguese boss is thought to be desperate to land the England international.

A bid of £40 million would certainly show how much Mourinho wants to land Rooney and the bid would certainly be very hard for the Red Devils to turn down.
