Chelsea are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi as the Serie A side are said to be ready to cash-in on the Italian international according to the Daily Star.

Jose Mourinho has been strongly linked with a move to sign the 30 year old battler and the Blues boss could certainly do with fresh steely option for his midfield.

John Obi Mikel has been linked with a move to Turkey and youngster Oriol Romeu has been loaned out to Valencia. Mourinho may well look to welcome Michael Essien back to the Chelsea first team set-up after loaning in the Ghana international whilst at Real Madrid in 2012/13.

De Rossi however could offer a new angle to his midfield as the Roma man is capable of getting forward and has an eye for goal. Having spent his entire professional career at his hometown club the midfield general may feel the time is right for a new challenge.

Daniele De Rossi has has amassed 418 appearances for the Giallorossi since making his debut for the club in October 2001 but during that time he has never won a Scudetto, collecting a painful total of five runners-up medals to date.
